has survived, or has died of natural causes while still in office.
1840 :William Henry Harrison : died of pneumonia one year after taking office
1860 : Abraham Lincoln : was assassinated in his second term
1880 : James Garfield : was assassinated in 1881
1900 : William McKinley re-elected : was assassinated 1901
1920 : Warren G Harding : died in office in 1923
1940 : Franklin D Roosevelt re-elected : died in office in his subsequent term
1960 : John F Kennedy : was assassinated 1963
1980 : Ronald Reagan : was shot in the chest but recovered
All of the presidents listed here were succeeded by their vice presidents
Only one president outside of the above group died in office; Zachary Taylor, who died in 1850
George Dubya Bush was elected in 2000
