Hardware copy protection voted down The proposal to put copyright
protection into ATA hard drive specifications has been voted down by the
T.13 committee. Though the vote was 8 to 7 in favor of including Curtis
Stevens' "Proposal to Support Generic Functionality" in the spec, a
two-thirds supermajority of eligible organizations was required, so the
measure failed. The move to build copyright protection into hardware was
led by the 4C Entity made up of IBM, Intel, Matsushita Electric and
Toshiba. Observers expect that copyright protection will not be defeated
by this vote, but will be shifted to other parts of the technology
equation.
