RE: Old photos and mystory

In 1979, a friend gave me a phone number and said "call this with
a modem." I did so, and it answered "Pentagon TIP". Some experimentation
revealed the fact that I could type in the letter "C", and a number
between 1 and 255 to connect to a system on the Arpanet. At that time
you could simply use "guest" for your username and password on many
of the systems. I remember spending a long time on a system at UC
Berkeley.

Ah, those were the days.

In 1989/1990 I setup and managed a big chunk (25K+ systems, ae.ge.com) of 3
(ge.com).

I also spliced DNS/SMTP to 1500 workstations and an alternate uplink through
X.400/OSI to the
VMS/X.400 and CCmail mess with a totally custom sendmail.cf config. I
implemented a fuzzy
X.500 style aliasing system using the uucp lookup hook and a custom C
program. What fun!

GEIS at the time charged $0.50/page for email on their 'public' X.400
system.

I played with A(I think), B, and C-News before INN came out.
