I believe this is the same method that professors use to trap and keep grad
students working on their dissertations. Dangle an RA position in front of
the student, let them invest a few years, and then you can get practically
anything you want out of them.

In the Southern US the same basic method is used for catching raccoons.
Substitute coconut with small hole drilled in log, with 2 nails driven in
at angles. Drop in a shiny bit of metal (washer or whatnot). Try not to
imagine the "Severe Tire Damage" effects involved.
