The protocol used by Crit is based directly on HTML and extends
naturally from HTML links, and is completely open and documented:
http://crit.org/draft-yee-url-textsearch-00.txt

Moreover, Crit is a free service, the software is open source,
and it is the only open, truly public Web annotation system to date.
Not only is it the most open of the annotation systems out there, it
is the only one that is *capable* of letting anyone at all attach
inline annotations to any web page in a publicly-viewable way.
