On a year-by-year basis, early on, Transputers were *cheaper* than
their equivalent SPARC cousins. But you're right: price is a design
tradeoff. It's also in the interface between engineering and the biz
champs.

I don't know the answer to the question I posed, but I see examples
all around; the products with the best specs along some technical
dimension of interest are rarely the market leaders.
