I love this kind of attitude!

>We require all of our potential developers (regardless of experience)
>to complete three of our problem sets , found at
>http://6916.lcs.mit.edu. If you have three weeks to spare, you can do
>these problem sets at one of our training 'boot camps,' held
>regularly in Cambridge, MA and starting in March at our offices in
>Los Angeles , San Francisco. People who complete the problem sets
>successfully at one of our boot camps will receive $1000 regardless
>of whether they decide to work at ArsDigita or not. If you can't take
>the time off, you can complete the problem sets on your own. This is
>actually a better deal for most serious hackers, as people who
>complete the problem sets on their own receive a $10K signing bonus
>if hired (and we've hired everyone who has done this successfully on
>their own.)

But hey, that kind of attitude suffuses Greenspun's work ;-)

I hear they have an LA office now, taking on that Caltech connection...

===================================
Hi,

ArsDigita is hiring programmers. We are a company with $18M in
annualized revenue, 70 developers, and are doubling every 6 months
(we had 7 people last February). We are pre-IPO, and are planning on
going public by the end of this year. Our focus is on developing our
open-source web-based collaboration toolkit, and building interesting
sites with the toolkit. More information about the company can be
found at: http://arsdigita.com/about_arsdigita.html.

The work environment at ArsDigita is one where the programmers are
the stars. Our organizational hierarchy is relatively flat, with a
few high-level business people taking care of things like leasing
office space, talking to investors, and monitoring our cash flow.
Outside of that, everyone is a developer. If a programmer wants to be
a project lead and interact with clients, they can do so. If a
programmer is more inclined to hack on toolkit modules, database
drivers, or do systems administration, they can do that as well. If a
programmer wants to help teach one of our courses at MIT, Caltech, or
in-house, they can focus on that. Most people end up doing a mixture
of all these activities. No matter what you want to focus on,
ArsDigita is a great place for programmers, because instead of being
managed by a non-technical pointy-haired boss, you are working with
other experienced developers whom you can communicate with and learn
from.

This is
actually a better deal for most serious hackers, as people who
complete the problem sets on their own receive a $10K signing bonus
if hired (and we've hired everyone who has done this successfully on
their own.)

To get and idea of our salaries: new graduates with a strong CS get
$100K per year, plus stock and assorted benefits (all the soda you
can drink).

Check out our jobs page for more information: http://arsdigita.com/jobs.html.
There are also cash and stock option incentives for people that
merely refer their friends to work here (If we hire them, of course.)

We also need a few experienced unix (solaris, HP/UX, Linux) systems
administrators, especially people with Oracle DBA experience. I don't
know the payscale for sysadmins/DBA but I imagine it is similar to
developers (I can find this out if I get feedback from people that
want to admin.)

We also have offices in Munich, Oslo, Tokyo and London, and will be
expanding to Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York City this summer.

Email rolf@arsdigita.com if you are interested, or have questions.

Also, if you aren't interested, but know someone who might be, let them know!

Thanks,

Rolf
