While Intel was drawing the ire and fire of privacy groups over its plans to
identify PC users traversing the Web by tying them to a unique serial number
built into its Pentium III processors, a little-known software developer was
awarded a patent last week that may derail a year-long effort by the World
Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and leading Internet companies to come up with a
solution to online privacy.
