Bell Labs announced that a proposed standard for managing cookies,
which are small data files that Web site operators covertly place on
visitors' PCs to track their movements, has been published by the
Internet Engineering Task Force and is in use on the World Wide
Web. The proposed standard, called RFC 2109 on HTTP State Management,
was co-authored by Netscape and Bell Labs researchers. Netscape plans
to support the standard in the Navigator 4.0 portion of
Communicator. The standard lets users pick which cookies, if any, to
accept. Bell Laboratories, a division of Lucent Technologies Inc., in
Holmdel, N.J., is at (908) 946-9146 or _http://www.lucent.com_.
