Powell's offers all e-three: Powells.com will expand its e-bookstore and
offer Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Reader e-books, in addition to 4,500
Gemstar eBook titles. Since Barnes and Noble no longer offers Gemstar
titles, Powell's is now the only bookseller to serve titles in all three
major formats. Michael Powell, president of the prestigious Portland,
Oregon, bookstore, said that the additions came as a result of continued
growth in customer demand for electronic titles. And while many industry
analysts question the growth of e-books, Powell said that third-quarter
sales of Gemstar titles on Powells.com experienced a 28 percent gain in
2001 over the previous year. By adding Adobe Acrobat Microsoft Reader
titles, Powells.com now offers immediate download on more than 13,000
selections, discounting most at least 20 percent. It might be a good sign
of confidence that the e-book industry is expanding when an independent
bookstore like Powell's gets involved.
