Which alternatives are you thinking of? FTP and GridFTP

two that immediately come to my mind.
I'd agree about the Apples and Oranges, except that there is a remarkably
close overlap of functionality between DAV and NFS, and some of the more
popular DAV applications make a DAV server appear to be a disk (Web Folders,
WebIFS, Apple WebDAVfs).
