You know my answer to this Dave; HTTP.  If there's any moving on to be done,
it's from RPC to HTTP.  HTTP is a newer technology than RPC.  I have many years
of implementation experience with RPC, and I'm telling you that HTTP is a better
way to do things.

I'm perfectly willing to accept that RPC-over-HTTP services can call themselves
web services, but I refuse to accept anybody's definition of that term that
excludes existing, or future, HTTP-based web services.
