I'm finally trying to become well-rounded and spend some time in
windows (2K) - I'm unemployed right now and can afford the hassle of
learning a new OS. The list compiled by FoRK is helpful, but there's
two things that I don't think I'm able to give up -
- A window manager that gives me several workspaces (AKA virtual
desktops, rooms, etc.) and allows real-estate (focus) driven
selection. I've never had the luxury of dual screens, this is what
makes it for me. Every X WM has had this for years, I can't believe
that I haven't been able to find it for Windows.
- An X server real enough to let me map X clients running on another
box onto my desktop. Cygwin's server doesn't do this, does it?
I'm using VNC right now and it feels like regressing back to the
stone age.
Anyone have any pointers? Do people really live without these
features? I can spend a little money, especially with a free trial
(but I dunno about the prices that commercial windows X servers were
last time I looked, several hundred dollars - am I just spoiled?).
