I don't think it's particularly the Multinationals. That would be too 
easy. IMH it's the ignorance that the general US public exhibits
with respect to people from other cultures. They just don't care.
Atleast this is something that pissed me off of several times when 
I had to deal with US Americans. Canadians seem to be quite 
different btw. (hi Owen!). And yes, sure, there are lots of exceptions.

It seems difficult for most Americans to accept that their believe set
is just one of severals that are around in the world. And none of them 
is superior to the other, atleast in the subjective perception of the 
people adhering to each group. 

I found that I can't stand the "general American culture". This is why 
I have returned to Europe after travelling and working in the US for 
about a year. I neither can stand very much the German culture, so 
this is why I live in Spain.
But imagine the poor people who are affected in their home countrys 
by Western politics and cannot run away. Sure they hate you, and not 
just since a few weeks...
