I'll ask again:  what is the central, unified "strongly held belief system" that
underlies consumerism?  I think it's a collection of separate but interacting
epiphenomena and capitalist memes, not a faith per se.  I doubt you can find many
who would answer "yes" to the question "do you live your life according to the
principles of consumerism?"
