I'm speaking of course of Manhatten, Arkansas (pop. 317) --- the strangely
underreported target of the "other" terrorist attack on 9-11...
----
September 12th, 2001 (Manhatten, Arkansas) In a bizarre incident yesterday a 92
year-old naturalized American Muslim of Egyptian descent (Mohammed Abdolla Omar
al-Fayd al-Shayk Walid Farid Rashid Shahid Abdullah Mohammed) broke out of the
local nursing home early in the morning, stole a tractor from the John Deere
dealership down the street, and drove it into the local grain elevator, toppling
a local landmark visible for several miles in all directions and, indeed, totally
obliterating the only skyline feature of Manhatten. Mr. Mohammed miraculously
survived the attack and was apprehended shuffling down the road a short while
later in a hospital gown and suicide headband. Said arresting officer Sheriff's
Deputy Buster Grimes: "it was freakin' weird, man." Officials have yet to
definitively tie this incident to the WTC and Pentagon attacks, though the FBI
said it may drop by next Tuesday if it can figure out where the town is.
Betty Thibodeaux, 101, a fellow resident with Mr. Mohammed at the Setting Sun
Retirement Community, recalled a quiet, peaceful man and expressed confusion and
dismay about what might have caused him to do such a thing as well as wondering
what kind of Jello would served at lunch. "Omar --- that's what we called him,
Omar --- he was such a quiet guy. Said his prayers and all, yeah, but other than
that he was just fine. Spoke English real good, not all that hawking and what
not those boys with the towels on their heads down at the Quickie Pickie seem to,
do you know? Hell of a bingo player. And he had such eyes, you know, those
mysterious deep eyes like Yule Brenner in "The King and I?" Reminded me of my
Jimmy, that was my husband's name before he died --- well I guess it's still his
name but he's dead now, died of the pyles back in '63 --- oh, he was white, of
course, born right here in Manhatten --- but back in the Big One he was stationed
in North Africa. I remember one time..."
---
But of course what I was saying applies equally well to the WTC attacks.
