Same reason they compute the 5 trillionth bit of pi, simulate climate with
monte carlo, search a known space for a crypto key (originally to get crypto
laws lifted, but that was accomplished), or any other scientificly worthless
project.

Because the planet is too cold and we need to heat it up!

Like one of my roomates, who will intentionally go turn on a light in a room
he's not in, after I have turned it off, and turns the lights on during the
day too - he's very American.
