Finally I understand why the expression "motherhood and apple pie" gets 
snickers from the crowd: it is because for their inner eye they are 
picturing all the confused people who misunderstand 3) for 1 and 2 with 
fatal social consequences.  The role of apple pie in American society 
is confusing for those of us raised on fish.
