You missed the part where "the people" != "the individuals that make up said
people."  Tyranny of the majority, democracy as a flawed system, survival of
the fittest meme, etc. etc. etc.  Sometimes it's just a fact:  the users
don't always know what's best for them.  ;-)  And they can't ever be relied
on to tell us what's best for "us" in any case.
