Just to pile on late..
I support holding/moderating non-subscriber posts.
What is the big deal of a non-member's post is held
for a short period of time until a moderator accepts it ?

Another idea that may be a compromise is a change in mailman...
Many mail list managers do a confirm-reply for accepting
subscriptions.  Eg, it makes you reply to a subscribe confirmation
to validate your email address.
Why not make it demand a confirm-reply from a non-member post?
That way any real non-member poster can self confirm themselves
and permit the post to show up on the list, but any spammer
will likely be foiled.   no ?
