Actually, the reason I usually hear for using mainframes
or really large servers is to reduce by a large factor
the number of machines you have to administer.
E.g. see
You can agree or disagree with the numbers, but the
point is that "the whole purpose" proposed therein
is TCO, not increased reliability at the OS level.
