Well the statues are prettier than Ashcroft, and less likely to shred the
Constitution. So maybe he was afraid of being upstaged by them.
However, as a friend who's a liberal protestant told me, she's getting
tired of everyone blaming a religion for an individual's insecurities and
neuroses.
And, as the article pointed out, people in the previous administration
objected to the statues, so it can hardly be blamed on religious feeling
alone.
It's a corollary to that law about not attributing to malice that which
can be explained by stupidity.
