I don't know about dance, but people singing together was very widespread
in rural communities (usually during harvest; depending on degree of
industralization, there might be some pockets of it still left in the 3rd
world). Advent of radio and TV pretty much kills oral culture, though.
Dance was usually reserved for more formal settings.
