The IP lawyers have moved into academia and formed nests, and academia now
warrants the same care you would take in dealing with say a Microsoft or
Intel.

So there is now little motivation to be in academia, since the school ends
up owning everything just like a corp would, and they hassle you just as
much. The corps still (for now) pay bettter so avoid the .edu unless
teaching is in your blood. The bastard lawyers killed it like everything
else.
