The latest Economist has a good analysis of the current Israel/Palestinian
situation. Synopsis: Sharon's popularity is dropping fast, while
Palestinians are rallying around the flag, with Fatah and Hamas working more
closely together than they have in years. Palestinians realize they will
have to negotiate, but are willing to wait until a new government is in
place, since they see no benefit negotiating with Sharon.
An interesting question is whether the US is more interested in backing up
Israel, or is more interested in going after Iraq. Some kind of deal with
the Arabs about Israel, in return for Arab support for US action in Iraq, is
a distinct possibility.
