Another option is that it's now fairly trivial to set up an image gen 
script to take 'bob@bobsworld.com' and convert it into a GIF.  I've noticed 
that some of the free webspace providers, and a few merchants (I think I 
saw it on PayPal?), are using this visual verification ("type the number 
you see to the left") to avoid hosting warez, allowing bogus ecom accounts 
and other automated service sign-ups.

Advantage of this is it doesn't require Javascript.  Can't cut/paste though...
