He's probably buying from a distributor in the city. 2x normal price is
not unusual when you *have* to get it in Manhattan (need it yesterday,
how the film/TV biz runs). When I worked there doing TV engineering we
ordered components & stuff from out of town distributors except in
emergencies or sole supplier cases. We built enough custom gear that it
actually made a difference in the bottom line at the indie production
facility where I worked. Of course, the savings probably got burned up
keeping the clients in coke or something.
