French, schmench. The real masters here were Wisconsin's dairy farmers. For years and years it was illegal to sell yellow margarine in Wisconsin. (One could buy margarine with a little packet of food coloring that you could mix into it, if you chose.) Every year someone who represented consumers (from Milwaukee, say) would introduce a bill in the legislature in Madison that would legalize the sale of yellow oleo. Every year it would be amended to death: someone would offer an amendment to strike "yellow" and replace it with "purple"; when that was defeated, another amendment to replace "yellow" with "pink," then "blue" etc etc., till everyone got tired of the game and went home.
So: We'd allow only orange cheese from the moon; or red; or teal blue; or black ...
