For a long time, free people believed
that they shouldn't act out of either
fear or greed.  (emotions best left to
motivations of one's domestic animals,
whether two- or four-legged)

Adam Smith had a Stupid Idea: perhaps
greed can lead to good.  Unless I've
missed something, however, no one more
credible than Harry Flashman has made
a similar case for fear.
