 BMW, the German luxury car group, expects sales in the US to overtake
those in Germany for the first time this year, despite the worsening
relations between the two countries over Iraq, writes David Gow in Munich.

Dr Helmut Panke, chief executive, is forecasting another record year for
group sales and flat profits after last year's record of 2bn (1.36bn)
after tax, up 8.3% on 2001.

Dr Panke admitted that the mood in America had shifted and could pose
"hidden risks" to BMW sales there if the confrontation between the two
governments continued.
