Because it's a new virus, and maladapted. A pathogen wants to cruise
around in an infectious host checking out fresh booty, not get trapped
within a dead host.

Inversely, promiscuity makes a pathogen more vicious.

1918 influenza pandemic killed 20..40 MPeople. SARS is not even a blip on 
the radar screen yet.
