Historically, many of the former soviet
union bomb and mig factories were converted to
build titanium mountain bike frames. Russian
titanium frames were extremely popular because
the material was so cheap with the exception
of early export restrictions which thought they
were all used for migs or bombs. The rest,
as they say, is legacy.
