Aznar's government joined the war in Iraq in spite of 90% of public
opposition, but the voters didn't hold that against them according to
pre-election polls, perhaps because they were straight about it and
didn't make up stories to justify it.

Immediately after the Madrid bombs, there was talk of how they might
affect the election, but it was unclear whether it would be positive
or negative for the government - vote against them for contributing to
making Spain a target, or for them and their claims of better policies
against the bad guys?

They said straight away that it was ETA. This was supposed to play
into their hands. ETA denied it, several times. A communiquby the
"Abu Hafs Al-Masri Brigades" (said to be) related to Al-Qaeda was
published in Al-Qods Al-Arabi claiming responsability. Officially:
"Hasn't been authenticated". A tape with Koranic verses was found
with detonators in a stolen van. Unofficially: "Might have been
planted by ETA".

They backtracked slightly, saying that all avenues of investigation
were open. But they gave an instruction to Spanish embassies to
officially blame ETA. Unfortunately for them, that came out.

A mobile phone card was found with an unexploded bomb and linked to some
Moroccans. Three of them and two Indians were arrested. A videotape
from Abu Duchan al-Afghani, the "military chief of Al-Qaeda in Europe"
was found that claimed responsability and said "[...] It's a reply to
your collaboration with the criminal Bush and his allies [...]".

Then on polling day(!), Ana Palacio says ETA is still the main suspect
and suggests that ETA may have collaborated with Al Qaeda! It looks
like the gov is dissembling for political advantage.

Ergo, voters fucked them. Instead of "how big will their majority be",
it's "they lost".

Let's hope something similar, minus the bombs, happens to Bush, Blair,
Berlusconi and pals.
