Where's the surprise in this? US will lose if it has to fight mano a mano
(few thousands body bags are enough to immediately terminate a campaign), 
and current military hardware is ridiculously expensive. Not much more where that came from.
(Nukes are cost-effective, but you don't really want to go there). 

If you look at the trends in the deficit, demographics, lack of innovation
and growth the old West is about to get finished. 

There are two technologies which can completely change the picture: molecular
manufacturing and AI. Both see next to zero R&D. See lack of innovation,
above.
