Religion is...

Willful irrationality.
A resiliant collection of self-protecting memes couched in pervasive 
peer-pressure reinforcement and imprinting.
Countered only by broad knowledge and experience with better memes.
Big business.
A way to control the masses, primarily for big business and (in the past 
at least, at least subtly now) corrupt leaders.
"Wishing makes it so" writ large.
More trouble than it's worth.
