That brings back fond memories. I cut my real-time
programming eyeteeth working on the early generation
of electronic engine control software for Ford, in 1979
and 1980. Road tests were really road tests. We would
burn the software into EEPROMs, plug them into test
harnesses beneath the dash, and drive down I94.

You soon learned to keep one chip with a known, good
rev in your pocket. ;-)
