[FoRK] U.S. Officially Surrenders in Iraq, Launches Civil War

Yet another brutal manipulation and subsequent insult to the Kurds by
a Bush government.

As the world looked on in disinterest, Saddam gassed the Kurds
repeatedly in the late 1980s. There was no expression of moral
outrage at the UN during this time, when Saddam actually DID have
biological weapons.

Throughout Desert Storm, the CIA and US State Department encouraged a
Kurdish rebellion in the North of Iraq, distributing leaflets and
promising them assistance in the liberation of their people through
PsyOp radio broadcasts. This caused Saddam to divert many of his
elite forces into the Northern region and had the effect of sparing
them the brunt of the US assault. Yet when the advance stopped short
of Baghdad and attempts to terminate Saddam failed, the US allowed
the IRaqi military to pound the Kurdish settlements using artillery,
helicopter gunships, and (allegedly) even further gas attacks. As
the world congratulated themselves on their victory, thousands died.

Amazingly, Kurds yet again joined the coalition forces in 2003 to
oust Saddam in this conflict, and are getting fucked once again. One
autocracy is replaced with another, only this one is shielded by a
useless piece of paper.

Way to go, George. You've just inspired millions more terrorists.
The Kurds will make the Palestinians look like peaceniks.
