But then, all I/O to the machine-on-a-stick can in turn be captured. ;)

The smartcard community's fix for this in the 90's was to perform a
public-key transaction on the card's CPU, so that the private key never
leaves the card.

I guess we're waiting for the "foo-on-a-usb-stick" crowd to reinvent that
wheel, assuming some smartcard company didn't patent it -- they were
astonishingly litigious and proprietary in outlook (which is, in my
opinion, one reason why smartcards never got anywhere outside of the
euro-conglomerates that created them).
