F'r instance, the frickin' bigass high-dollar Foundry GigE switches at
two-jobs-ago only supported something weird like 3K jumbo frames.  If
you wanna use all the bandwidth at 1Gbps, a 1500 MTU is just stupid.

Especially in this case since the place was a Lab for the Development of
enterprise-grade Open Source.

It ain't enterprise-grade unless there's photon-torpedo drivers,
