Except it is filling a huge, demonstrated need, and the spec is open.

from the comments, it looks like google has joined the RSS Advisory
Board, so it is even possible this will become part of the official
RSS spec.

and note that Yahoo's Cutting is sponsoring a summer of code project
supporting gdata:
