Or, alternatively, does faith in God metamorphose into faith in the 
Authroity and Institutions surround God in such a way that the 
individual doesn't notice and subsequently fails to comprehend the 
difference.

For God here you can substitute, well, any belief from Religion to 
Enviromentalism to "Vi versus Emacs" to Enron to Political affiliation 
(see Labour vs New Labour for example).
