[FoRK] ripping and transcoding (on OS X)

I would like to consolidate my DVD library to a TByte array,
using the highest quality/lowest loss (audio tracks). I can
use DVDshrink to reedit DVDs down to the bare movie. I can
rip that to a bunch of .VOBs & Co by means of Mac the Ripper,
or equivalents.

Now I would like to transcode the VOBs into something good
(H.264 is good, no? If I steam down 4.1 GByte to 1.2 GByte,
would that be enough?). I also don't want to lose any different language
audio tracks. Can I do this with QuickTime Pro? Something else?
HandBrake takes literally forever on a PowerPC.

How do you people do it? Linux, Windows, OS X, open source,
proprietary, doesn't matter. Only the results count. Should't
be too expensive, though.
