The problem with "Rugged Individualism" as a social movement is that
your buds won't back you up unless there's something in it for them.

Naw, but they make nice scapegoats for the folks who advocated "free
markets" only where it benefited their pocketbooks.  ISTR the whole
"free trade for you, protection for me, risk for the State" thing
happened a few generations back, also.
