I remember some interesting work a few years ago, simulating proper
keyboard actions using computer-controlled solenoids.  You could get
everything from the weight and thunk of a grand-piano hammer-action to
the plucking-action feel of a harpsichord.

Or is that what the cheap crappy stuff does nowadays?  If not, I guess I
have yet another entry for my "things that should exist" list...
