I question the need of more than 5-7 W of always-on machinery per
household -- that is, using current technology. That hardware (e.g. ALIX)
can do router, firewall, switch, email/web, and whatever else
you need, without breaking a sweat. The same applies to networking.
Future technology can only make things better.
