I will say one other thing.  In the limit, ALL groups may in fact  
have the same general *group* failure modes.  Perhaps.

Where the rationalist and the theist will always disagree is on  
whether theism constitutes a grave individual failure *in itself.*   
The rationalist (you say materialist, but I think that's a rhetorical  
dodge) will say that theism is or results in an inability to accept  
reality on its own terms, and would consider that a devastating  
consequence all by itself.
