Received a used, vintage copy of the soundtrack to Heavy Metal - The
Movie tonight from an online seller... along with Foreigner, Peter
Schilling, and Blue Oyster Cult... mining the depths of nostalgic,
adolescent angst. I FELT so much, back then, to each and every song
on each of these albums. But hardly anything more than this song:
Journey's Open Arms.
Maybe you weren't even around then. Maybe you were already old
enough to be cynical about this kind of metal-power-ballad pablum.
Maybe you didn't wait in line, with a provisional driver's license
that said you were 16, technically too young to see this R-rated
movie on opening night, despite being a subscriber to the magazine /
comic. Doesn't matter that Journey (not to mention Don Fag-In!)
shouldn't even have been on the soundtrack, or that B:O:C had done a
total end-to-end spec soundtrack that had almost-entirely been
rejected by the totally uncool mainstream publishers of the rag /
movie producers!
This --- with perhaps "Cool World" and Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for
"The Passion of Christ" and maybe Tangerine Dream's "Thief" --- have
to go down as the best soundtracks in movie / music history.
Hardly matters that you might not remember it --- you will; actually
listening to the songs can hardly fail to have an affect on anyone.
Open Arms, by Journey:
--
Lying beside you, here in the dark
Feeling your heart beat with mine
Softly you whisper, you're so sincere
How could our live be so blind
We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side
So now I come to you, with open arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me
Open arms
Living without you, living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you, wanting you near
How much I wanted you home
But now that you've come back
Turned night into day
I need you to stay.
(chorus:)
So now I come to you, with open arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say
So here I am with open arms
Hoping you'll see what your love means to me
Open arms
