I tried this rubbing of the eye corners.  Nothing.

But I have had the "light/dark sequence followed by fireworks" effect. 
Which is pretty neat.  :)  But I have to rub my eyes pretty hard to 
scratch an itch because they feel full of sand to get the effect.

The effect goes away as soon as I open my eyes and they re-focus....  At 
most I get five seconds of visual weirdness.

I've always blamed it on the astigmatism.
