What we did (speaking literally) was prohibit the state from making
any laws 'respecting an establishment of religion.'

That got elaborated into a general separation of church and state
somewhere along the way, but you can see that the plain language is
not quite as clear cut as I'd like, which leads to lots of my tax
dollars going to lots of places I'd rather it not.
