Even cheaper than melamine, you can get sheets of thin plastic that
clings to most walls -- instant whiteboard without much fuss.

Quick search with Google finds the following description:

and a price ($35 for 25 sheets).

Also, 3M makes giant Post-It pads -- you use them on an easel and can
then put them up on a wall when they're finished.  Handy if you don't
have a high-tech way to record your drawings.
